7 October 2014 – Uruguay prohibits sale of farmland to foreign states

Uruguay has passed a law prohibiting the sale of land titles to other states. Specifically, the law prohibits the sale of agricultural land to foreign companies with direct or indirect participation by foreign states. This does not, however, affect the sale of land to foreign individuals or companies with no government involvement.

In an official statement, the government stressed that the law was established for the purpose of preserving Uruguay’s full sovereignty over the country’s natural resources, and particularly its land.
