The Ministers of Foreign Relations of Germany and Uruguay, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Rodolfo Nin Novoa, met together at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
The meeting focused on bilateral relations and regional and international issues. Steinmeier praised the smallest Spanish-speaking country in South America as an anchor of stability in the region. In 2015, Germany was the largest importer of Uruguayan goods in Europe, and is thus one of Uruguay’s main export destinations.
There are currently around 10,000 Germans and 40,000 people of German descent living in Uruguay. This represents an extraordinarily high proportion in relation to the country’s total population. There are also some 60 German companies currently operating in the South American nation.
In the field of renewable energies, there are plans to expand cooperation with German companies in Uruguay.
