Uruguay has become the first country in the world to permit the cultivation and sale of marijuana under state control. A new law which entered into force today establishes that registered consumers over the age of 18 will be able to purchase up to 40 grams of cannabis a month for their own use in pharmacies, at a price of 20 to 22 Uruguayan pesos (around 70 cents of a euro) per gram. Sales units will be limited to 10 grams. Annual production of 22 tons is expected. However, sales will not begin until the end of the year.
