Uruguayan President José Mujica harshly condemned FIFA following the record-setting punishment it has dealt to Luis Suárez during the World Cup.
The international football association unleashed its anger on a small nation, Mujica declared on the TV programme “De Zurda”, broadcast by the Venezuelan channel Telesur.
FIFA was tough on Suárez “because Uruguay is a small country and so it is cheap for them to punish us,” the president said in a telephone interview with the programme hosted by journalist Víctor Hugo Morales and Argentine former world champion Diego Maradona. Earlier in the show, Maradona had also strongly criticised FIFA over the Suárez case.
“The sanction against Luis Suárez is an assault on kids from poor backgrounds,” added Mujica.
