27 August 2014 – Authorised marijuana growing begins

The first ten people have registered with the newly founded institute for the regulation of marijuana cultivation.

Uruguay permits the cultivation and purchase of up to 40 grams of marijuana a month in pharmacies for personal use, under a law set in force by Uruguayan President José Mujica in December 2013.

Uruguay is the first country in the world to legalise the cultivation of cannabis. The government hopes that the new law will help to decrease drug-related crime, among other goals.
