26 June 2014 – Luis Suárez penalised by FIFA

Luis Suárez, the star forward for the Uruguayan side, has been harshly penalised by FIFA for biting Giorgio Chiellini in the Group of 16 game against Italy at the Football World Cup in Brazil. Suárez was suspended for nine official games with his national team (not including friendly matches) and banned from participating in any sort of football-related activity for four months. He must also pay a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs (some 82,000 euros) and was prohibited from attending Uruguay’s remaining World Cup games. After two similar cases of unsportsmanlike behaviour in the Dutch and English leagues, Suárez had already received suspensions for numerous games.
