25 January 2007 – Agreement with the United States

Uruguay and the United States signed a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) in Montevideo today. Uruguay should take advantage of possibilities for opening up trade with international markets, declared the Minister of Economy Danilo Astori with regard to the agreement, which could be a prior step to a free trade agreement. Uruguay’s signing of the agreement with the United States has further aggravated the current crisis in Mercosur. The Uruguayan government has accused the South American economic bloc of not giving sufficient consideration to the country’s interests, particularly when it comes to conflicts with fellow Mercosur member Argentina.
