Uruguay will receive a total of 120 civil war refugees from Syria. The first 40 people are expected to arrive in September, and another 80 will follow in February 2015.
“Our aim is to give them the opportunity to integrate into Uruguayan society,” said Javier Miranda, secretary of Human Rights at the Ministry of Education and Culture, at a press conference. According to Miranda, 60 percent of the refugees will be children.
Miranda stressed that the Syrian refugees will be able to move freely and will enjoy all of the same rights to employment opportunities, social security, education, etc. as any Uruguayan citizen.
