By an overwhelming majority, the Uruguayan Senate approved a bill that allows marriage between same-sex couples. In December of last year, the bill was passed by the lower house, with 81 of the 87 representatives present voting in favour of equality for lesbians and gays.

The “Ley de Matrimonio Igualitario” (Egalitarian Marriage Law) governs matrimony, the choice of surname, and rights to adoption and in vitro fertilisation for all couples, regardless of sexual orientation, and explicitly states that the terms “husband and wife” shall be replaced by “spouses”.
