Venezuela has declared an economic emergency. For months, the economy of the worlds most oil-rich country has only managed to stay afloat with loans from Russia and China. In April of last year, Venezuela and Uruguay signed an agreement under which Uruguay would supply 300 million dollars worth of agricultural products to Venezuela, in exchange for a corresponding amount of oil. But while Uruguay has fulfilled its obligations, Venezuela, threatened with bankruptcy, has not paid its debts. Now milk producers in Uruguay have set up roadblocks in 19 departments to protest this non-compliance with the agreement. ’Venezuela has received more than 100 million dollars worth of products from the dairy sector. The goods have been delivered and consumed. But we havent seen the money for what we have supplied’, declared Conaprole, Uruguays biggest dairy products company.
