A tornado that struck the town of Dolores (population 25,000) on Friday, 15 April caused major devastation, including four fatalities. Vehicles flew through the air, trees and power line poles were snapped in two like matchsticks. Firefighters and emergency workers from the surrounding towns and cities and Montevideo worked around the clock, and many people were reported missing.
In addition, there were floods across the country due to heavy rains. Some 2,000 people were evacuated, 30 roads were blocked, and a total of seven people were killed.
