From January to August more than 1.9 million tourists visited Uruguay. According to the authorities, this reflects an 8.9% increase compared to the same period in 2014. The Ministry of Tourism expects that by the end of 2015, more than 2.8 million tourists will visit the smallest Spanish-speaking country in South America. Income from tourism in the first eight months of the year totalled 1.152 billion euros, an increase of 6.9% over the same period last year. Tourism is an important source of income for Uruguay, and is accordingly promoted through major campaigns. The increase in visitors from Argentina (+14%) and Europe (+10%) was decisive in this growth.
