Former Uruguayan dictator Juan María Bordaberry died at the age of 83 in his Montevideo home. In 2006, Bordaberry was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the killings of a number of political opponents during the military regime. Since 2007, he had been serving out his sentence at home due to ill health. Bordaberry was elected president of the South American nation in 1971. Two years later, he directed the civilian-military coup that ushered in dictatorship which lasted until 1985.
