The first five Syrian refugee families have now arrived in Uruguay. The families, comprising 42 people in all, will receive accommodation and full benefits from the Uruguayan government. Upon their arrival at the Hogar San José, a home on the outskirts of Montevideo, they were welcomed by President José Mujica.
The regional representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees accompanied the families on their arrival to Uruguay. At a press conference, he praised the country for its solidarity and the warm reception offered to the refugees by the institutions and people of Uruguay. He also called on other countries to follow the example of the South American country.
