16 April 2014 – President Mujica: 74 percent increase in personal wealth

Uruguayan President José Mujica, who has a very simple lifestyle as a matter of principle and categorically refuses to wear a tie, is often referred to as the world’s poorest president. In his latest sworn statement of assets, a mandatory requirement for all of the country’s 42,000 public officials every two years, Mujica declared total personal assets worth 322,883 U.S. dollars, which represented a 74 percent increase in his personal wealth since 2012. The president explained this increase by noting that, among other things, until recently an amount of slightly more than 104,000 U.S. dollars in cash had not been entered in his bank accounts and had therefore not been previously declared for this reason.
