Uruguay is considered one of the safest countries in Latin America, one of the many reasons why the tourism industry is booming, and set a new record during the first months of the year. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the country welcomed a total of 1,089,000 tourists in January and February of this year. The Ministry reported that the largest increase registered was in the number of tourists from Argentina, which grew by 25% (846,000 in total), followed by Brazil (103,000). Punta del Este received the most visitors, at 312,000, followed by Montevideo with 150,000. During all of 2016, Uruguay welcomed 3,328,450 foreign tourists, an increase of 12.3% compared to 2015 and also a record for the country.
