Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano has passed away at the age of 74. He died in a hospital in his native Montevideo as a result of cancer. Galeano is considered one of the most important journalists and authors of Latin America.
Galeano made his first sales of material to newspapers in Montevideo at the age of 14. By the age of 20 he was the deputy editor of the weekly publication Marcha. He reached worldwide acclaim in 1971 with his master work “The Open Veins of Latin America”, in which he explored the history of South America from the time of its “discovery”.
