President José Mujica met with U.S. President Barack Obama during a state visit to the United States. The topics on the agenda for their talks included economic and trade relations, educational policy, the situation at the U.S. prison camp in Guantánamo, and the tense relations between the United States and Cuba, Venezuela and Brazil.

At a press conference following the meeting, Mujica said that Obama had expressed a commitment to improving the situation at the U.S. prison camp in Guantánamo. Obama is determined to “close the prison before the end of his term in office.” Mujica continued: “If a president is prepared to end this disgrace, the least one can do is to help with this difficult situation,” alluding to his offer for Uruguay to receive up to 12 prisoners from Guantánamo.
