Uruguayan President José Alberto Mujica Cordano was received in a private audience by Pope Francis. After their 45-minute-conversation, “Papa Francisco” described Mujica, a self-confessed atheist, as a wise man, while Mujica said he was happy about his meeting with the supreme leader of the Catholic Church.

Mujica, dressed simply as usual, warmly embraced the Pontiff and presented him with three gaucho statues and the book “La América Latina en el siglo XXI” (Latin America in the 21st Century) by Alberto Methol Ferré and Alver Metalli.
