After 14 hours of debate, the Uruguayan Chamber of Deputies passed a bill for the legalisation of marijuana, by a vote of 50 in favour and 46 against. Now the bill will need to be passed by the Senate, where the government also holds a slight majority.

The proposed law grants the state the right to control and regulate the import, export, planting, harvesting, production, acquisition, storage and commercial distribution of cannabis and its by-products. Uruguay would be the first country in Latin America to legalise the use of marijuana.
