UNESCO has declared the industrial landscape of the world’s first meat extract factory in Fray Bentos a World Heritage Site, as an early example of the industrialisation of food production. The factory was founded in 1863 by German engineer Georg Christian Giebert, and supplied the global market as well as the armies of both World Wars with meat extract and corned beef. Large parts of the factory with its cold storage plants, industrial installations, machinery and docks have been maintained in almost original condition. The historic industrial complex also includes rural estates and workers’ settlements.
