Leftist politician Tabaré Vázquez has been sworn in as the new president of Uruguay. The 75-year-old oncologist took the oath of office before the General Assembly, during a ceremony attended by foreign leaders including Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and Cuban President Raúl Castro. Vázquez, who previously served as president between 2005 and 2010, won a clear victory in the presidential runoff elections on 1 December, with 56.6% of the votes, against conservative candidate Luis Lacalle Pou. Although he belongs to the same party as his predecessor, José Mujica, Vázquez has repeatedly criticized certain policy measures adopted by Mujica, such as the controversial legalization of marijuana.
